Why am I passionate about this?

I’ve written fourteen historical novels now and most of them include real historical characters. I particularly like writing about women I feel have been misjudged or ignored by historians, and trying to reassess them in the modern age. Fiction allows me to imagine what they were thinking and feeling as they lived through dramatic, life-changing experiences, giving more insight than facts alone could do. Sitting at my desk in the morning and pretending to be someone else is a strange way to earn a living but it’s terrific fun!

The books I picked & why

Book cover of The Paris Wife

Gill Paul Why did I love this book?

This was the book that made me want to write historical fiction about real people.

It’s the story of Hemingway’s first wife, Hadley Richardson, who supported him while he was trying to establish himself as a writer. She steps from the pages as a sympathetic, relatable young woman desperately trying to be a good wife to a man who frankly doesn’t deserve her. The Paris Wife brings Hadley to life in the way that biographies sticking to fact never could, and I adored it!

By Paula McLain,

Book cover of Alias Grace

Gill Paul Why did I love this book?

Most of this novel is narrated by Grace Marks, a servant girl who is supposed to have committed a murder but says she doesn’t remember doing it.

She is being interviewed by a psychiatrist who is trying to jog her memory. But is she telling him the truth? I love this use of a possibly unreliable narrator, based on a true story that remains unresolved to this day. It’s a disturbing and compelling read.

By Margaret Atwood,

Why should I read it?

What is this book about?

By the author of The Handmaid's Tale

Now a major NETFLIX series

Sometimes I whisper it over to myself: Murderess. Murderess. It rustles, like a taffeta skirt along the floor.' Grace Marks. Female fiend? Femme fatale? Or weak and unwilling victim? Around the true story of one of the most enigmatic and notorious women of the 1840s, Margaret Atwood has created an extraordinarily potent tale of sexuality, cruelty and mystery.

'Brilliant... Atwood's prose is searching. So intimate it seems to be written on the skin' Hilary Mantel

'The outstanding novelist of our age' Sunday Times

Book cover of The Marriage Portrait

Gill Paul Why did I love this book?

I was delighted when Maggie O’Farrell started writing historical fiction, and this one is a masterclass in novel writing.

It opens as teenaged Lucrezia is taken to a remote hunting lodge by her husband Alfonso, the Duke of Ferrara. He has ordered all her personal servants to remain behind and as they eat dinner, she realizes he is planning to kill her. What a beginning! The writing is lush and colorful, the characterizations subtle, and the story utterly gripping.

Book cover of Disobedient

Gill Paul Why did I love this book?

Artemisia Gentileschi was a talented artist, growing up motherless in a family of male artists, in 17th-century Rome, where a woman’s honor was her most valuable possession.

An impulsive action by the woman hired to be her chaperone sets in motion a horrifying and brutal chain of events. The pace of the story-telling, the colorful scene-setting, and the insights into Artemisia’s thoughts and feelings are picture-perfect. This is phenomenal writing by an author who in my opinion is better than Hilary Mantel.

Book cover of Fifth Avenue Glamour Girl

Gill Paul Why did I love this book?

While I was writing my novel about Elizabeth Arden and Helena Rubinstein, I heard that Renée Rosen was writing about Estée Lauder and couldn’t wait to read it.

She perfectly captures the pushy, driven, hilarious character of Estée, who was known for accosting strangers in the street to tell them they were wearing the wrong shade of lipstick for their skin tone. Renée Rosen is one of the authors whose books I always preorder: I love everything she writes.
